Both Hyundai mid-size cars are known for both ultra-high-efficiency and having the technological edge over many other new hybrid cars on the market today. However, they're distinguished from each other by degree, and it all comes down to how far you want to take your drive. Let our experts fill you in on the details.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

This model combines an electric motor, a 1.56-kWh battery, and a standard gas engine. The result is a spirited 139-net-horsepower hybrid system. Unlike its counterpart, there's no need to plug it in anywhere because electric power's drawn directly from the gas engine. The result: excellent fuel economy up to 58 combined mpg.

Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid

This model also runs on gas, with a 139-horsepower engine, as well as electricity, thanks to an 8.9-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. You can plug it in to recharge the latter, meaning, with a fully charged battery, you run on electric power alone for short distances of up to 29 miles. Both powertrains, however, yield a long-haul 630-mile total driving range.

The long story, short: if you prefer the safe bet of not having to recharge, the new Ioniq Hybrid might be the right choice. But if you're looking for extended range and the ability to recoup electric power at home or at charging stations across the country, a new Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid is the way to go.

Of course, they both have plenty of other features in common, too, both standard and available, depending on model and trim -- every perk designed to take long trips to the next level. They include:

  • Automatic emergency brakes
  • A blind-spot detector
  • A rear cross-traffic alert system
  • Lane change assistance
  • A pedestrian detector
  • Driver attention warning
  • Lane keep assistance
  • Smart cruise control
  • A power tilting and sliding sunroof
  • Premium cloth and leather seating options, which are available heated up front
  • 7- and 8-inch touchscreen display options
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless device charging
  • Integrated navigation
  • Eight-speaker Infinity Premium Audio
  • Blue Link Connected Car Service remote feature access and control, and more
